How do you get a transcript of a Zoom meeting for free?

To turn a Zoom recording to text for free, record locally — Zoom saves an audio-only .m4a and an .mp4 in your Documents/Zoom folder — then drop the file above. Zoom’s own transcripts depend on your plan. The first 2 minutes of any Zoom recording are free here; the rest is in Kalpa.

How to transcribe a Zoom recording

  1. Record the meeting

Click Record → Record on this computer (or to the cloud).

  2. Find the file

    Local: Documents/Zoom, look for audio_only.m4a. Cloud: zoom.us › Recordings › Download.

  3. Drop it above

The .m4a is smaller and faster than the .mp4.

  4. Get notes

Full meetings: open in Kalpa for a summary and action items.

Keep every Zoom call searchable without a bot

Record locally, upload the audio_only.m4a, and your Zoom calls become timestamped text you can search and quote. No meeting bot joins, so nobody on the call sees an extra participant.

Good to know

  • Local recording usually works on free Zoom accounts; cloud recording is available on some paid plans.
  • Zoom converts the recording after the meeting ends — wait for it to finish.
  • By default, only the host, or people the host allows, can record.

Questions and answers

Can I get a Zoom transcript without a paid plan?

Yes — record the Zoom meeting locally and upload the file here or to Kalpa; you don’t need Zoom’s own transcription feature.

Where are Zoom recordings saved?

Local Zoom recordings are saved in Documents/Zoom, and cloud recordings are under Recordings on zoom.us.

How much of a Zoom recording is free?

Kalpa transcribes the first 2 minutes of any Zoom recording for free, with no sign-up; the rest is in the Kalpa app.

Does Kalpa join my Zoom calls?

No, Kalpa never adds a bot to your Zoom calls — it only transcribes the recording you upload.

Is my Zoom recording stored?

Kalpa deletes the Zoom audio right after the transcript is made; the text is kept for 24 hours so the same recording isn’t processed twice, then deleted, and Kalpa does not use it to train models.
